Honesty and Transparency on the Labels of the Food YOU Eat

If you follow along with us, you know our big sticking point and a large part of the history behind why we founded 410 Farms Grass Fed Beef is consumer transparency. We believe all consumers have a right to know how their beef was raised and where it came from. Most importantly, even if you're not a supporter of grass fed beef specifically, we believe in supporting the American Rancher and high quality USA born and raised beef products.

A while back we wrote a little article that discussed the repeal of the Country of Origin Labeling. The COOL law encouraged great transparency by requiring retailers to provide country-of-origin labeling for fresh beef, pork, and lamb. Unfortunately this was repealed back in 2015. The most unfortunate consequence of the repeal of Country of Origin Labeling meant that now - the beef you buy at the store can absolutely be labeled 'Product of the USA' as long as it was PACKAGED here. Not born, raised, and slaughtered here. You could be buying beef with a Product of the USA label that was born, raised, and slaughtered basically anywhere in the world. It just has to be re-wrapped here in fresh packaging here in the US and it can be labeled Product of the USA.

You can read a little more about this in our previous post "Where Does Your Beef Actually Come From?"

Thankfully, there are actually legislators that have your best interests in mind as well as that of the American Rancher. There's new legislation that has been introduced in the last few months that will help combat some of what we're currently up against.

In October of 2019, US Senator Jon Tester of Montana introduced a resolution supporting the reestablishment of a country-of-origin labeling program, better known simply as COOL. The resolution puts forth a firm statement of support for COOL, which was repealed in 2015. Read more about that here from Ag Daily.

We've also seen legislation to help combat the proper labeling of the new fake meat products coming onto the market, including The Real MEAT Act of 2019 - which is focused on "Marketing Edible Artificials Truthfully - MEAT". We wrote a little about that a couple months ago here.

The American Rancher is up against a lot these days. Whether it's being in the middle of trade wars while we wait for the passage of the new USMCA Agreement that would replace the previous NAFTA, or we get caught up in the repeal of important laws like Country of Origin Labeling which allows foreign beef to be labeled as a product of the USA when it actually isn't - things have been hard for those of us who work to produce a high quality family farm raised USA beef product for you - the important consumer.

If you see legislation come up that helps to support us, please ask YOUR legislators to support it. In turn, you support us and you support AMERICAN JOBS. We all thank you not only for buying AMERICAN BEEF, but for supporting us and all that we do to feed you.
